Teeth remain vital due to the circulation of blood through the nerves inside them. If this circulation is disrupted due to reasons such as decay or a broken tooth enamel, pain and odor begin to emerge from the tooth. If left untreated, the tooth may eventually need to be extracted. To prevent this, a treatment called root canal treatment is performed.

In root canal treatment, the nerve inside the canal is removed, the canal is disinfected, and the inside is filled with special instruments. With a successful root canal treatment, the tooth can be saved and extraction can be avoided. Root canal treatment is usually completed in a single appointment. After the treatment, the tooth is restored with a composite filling, a porcelain onlay, or a porcelain crown.
